A list of parts of speech in English grammar include the following:

1. Verb

A verb isused to show an action or a state of being

go, write, exist, be

2. Noun

A nounis a word used to refer to people, animals, objects, substances, states, events, ideas and feelings. A noun functions as a subject or object of a verb and can be modified by an adjective.

John, lion, table, freedom, love ...

3. Adjective

Adjectives are used to describe or specify a noun or pronoun

good, beautiful, nice, my ...

4. Adverb

An adverb isused to modify a verb, adjective and other adverbs.

completely, never, there ...

5. Pronoun

A pronoun isused in the place of a noun or phrase.

I, you, he, she, it ...

6. Preposition

Prepositions are used before nouns to form a phrase tha tshows where, when, how and why

in, above, to, for, at ...

7. Conjunction

Conjunctions join clauses or sentences or words

and, but, when ...

8. Interjection

Interjections are used to show surprise or emotion.

Activity1

Teacher:

Follow 5 steps for identifying and diagraming the sentence patterns.

1.      Set off each prepositional phrase.

2.      Cross out the adjectives.

3.      Underline the subject, action verb, any direct object.

4.      Identify the sentence pattern by writing abbreviation above the words.

5.      Diagram the sentence, placing the adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases under the words they describe.

Teacher:Work in pairs.  Diagram sentence patterns concerning the material.  Form sentences by adding adjectives to the N-LV-N sentence patterns

4.3. Oral Practice“Sentence expansion”

The teacher provides a model sentence, which the students expand any way they wish, adding adjectives, adverbs,prepositional phrases.

Teacher:The boys are playing.

S1: The boys are playing football.

S2: The boys are playing football at the stadium.

S3:The boys of our school are ….
